Streamline the slab buying process: A Guide from Thomas PO.

Streamline the slab buying process: A Guide from Thomas PO.

Whether you’re building a custom table, a unique countertop, or a one-of-a-kind mantle, live edge and natural wood slabs bring unmatched character to your project. But if you’re new to buying wood slabs, the process can be overwhelming. At WoodVendors.com, we want to make sure you’re confident from the moment you start browsing to the day your slab arrives.

Here’s what to consider when buying a wood slab:

1. Start with the Right Species

Every wood species has its own personality. Think about the look and performance you want:

  • Walnut – Rich chocolate tones and bold grain. A favorite for tables.
  • Maple – Light in color, clean and consistent grain.
  • Elm – Swirling grain patterns and excellent character.
  • Oak – Durable with a classic grain structure.
  • Cherry – Warm reddish tones that deepen over time.

If you’re unsure, our Species Guide can help you compare options based on color, hardness, workability, and more.

2. Know Your Size Requirements

Measure your space and allow for trimming or milling. When browsing slabs, pay attention to:

  • Length & Width – Slabs can taper, so look for the minimum width you’ll need.
  • Thickness – Most slabs range from 1.5” – 2.5”. Thicker slabs tend to have more issues with drying.
  • Flatness –Slabs will need flattening or planing depending on your project.

Pro tip: 24″ (2 feet) of table length per person for rectangular tables.

3. Decide on Live Edge or Cut Edge

Do you want the natural, organic edge of the tree, or a squared-off edge that’s easier to work with?

  • Live Edge – Highlights the tree’s natural contours. No two pieces are alike.
  • Sawn Edge – Easier for joinery or building symmetrical furniture pieces.

Many of our slabs come with both options available—or even bookmatched pairs for mirrored grain patterns.

***At this stage it is a great time to figure out how much millwork you might want us to do.

These slabs are normally rough sawn.

We can do any type of millwork for you. From flattening, epoxy, finishing, bases, and anything else you might need.

Please reach out to a designer for more info on our available millwork.***

4. Examine the Grain, character, and color

While searching for your slab.. The photos on the website will be of the green slab.

This will show the grain and color that is closer to the finished product than the after kiln dried photos.

Grain, knots, spalting, and figure all affect the final look. Some buyers want clear grain, others want all the character a tree can show.

Look closely at the slab photos. We provide multiple angles and close-ups so you know exactly what you’re getting. And yes—what you see is what you get. We ship the exact slab you choose.

5. Time for a reinspection!

At WoodVendors.com, we do a complete reinspection of each slab before you buy it

We will make sure you know exactly what you are purchasing.

There will be no surprises!!

Things we check during the reinspection

  • Chalk the dimensions on the slab
  • Moisture %
  • Yield thickness with any twist or cupping noted.
  • Check for splits, voids, burn marks or any other type of beauty enhancer.

During the reinspection please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

This is the perfect time to see the slab and know exactly what you’re getting.

We will happily find another slab for you if your first choice is not up to par.

If you’re not sure what these terms feel free to reach out.

6. Shipping a Slab? No Problem

We ship slabs across the country with care. Whether it’s crated for freight or hand-packed for LTL, our logistics team ensures your slab arrives safely and in the condition you expect.

Tip: Residential shipping with liftgate service is available—just let us know your setup.

You are welcome to pick these up or do the freight yourself.

7. Have Questions? Talk to a Human

Seriously—give us a call. We’re woodworkers, too, and we’re happy to help you compare slabs, figure out what’ll work best for your project, or give advice on finishing.

Thanks to Jason Vedadi for allowing Wood Vendors the pleasure of providing this gorgeous Live Edge Walnut table for his beautiful home and sharing the pictures and the process.  We hope you enjoy it for many years to come!

.”>
1) First Step: Customer selects the green, rough-cut slabs they like from our massive inventory of live edge slabs. We have slabs available in most domestic species to match any decor. After the slabs are cut green, we carefully air dry and then kiln dry our slabs to less the 10% moisture content to minimize any movement down the road.
.”>
2) Time to pick out a base! Custom bases can be made upon request.
.”>
3) Re-inspected, kiln dried slabs are approved by customer or if for any reason you don’t like them, you can pick another set!
.”>
4) Cut-lines drawn on selected slabs by our master craftman, Titus for customer approval.
.”>
5) Titus then works his magic by book-matching the 2 slabs together.
.”>
.”>
6) Titus secures the tabletop to its base.
.”>
7) Your table is ready for it’s new home! We package our slabs and finished products to protect them during transit.
.”>
8) The day is here! Your table is home and how will you decorate it?
