Knotty Alder is popular for cabinetry, furniture, millwork, and components because of its warm color, fine grain, easy machining, and natural rustic character. But when buying Knotty Alder, choosing the right grade can make a big difference in appearance, yield, and cost.
At Wood Vendors, two options are Premium Frame Alder and Standard Frame Alder. Here’s the quick breakdown.
Premium Frame Alder
Premium Frame Alder is the highest grade of Knotty Alder sorted for rustic appearance.
It provides 83-1/3% structurally sound fiber and has a smaller, tighter defect structure. Larger unsound defects are restricted on the best face, giving you more usable lumber when appearance matters.
Best for:
Cabinetry • Millwork • Furniture • Casegoods • Mouldings
Choose Premium when: You want the rustic character of Knotty Alder without holes and large end checks and you need a higher yield and cleaner overall appearance.
Standard Frame Alder
Standard Frame Alder is a structurally sound, cost-effective grade designed for furniture frames and components.
It provides 66-2/3% structurally sound cuttings and allows larger defects than Premium Frame, including loose knots, holes and end checking. It is designed to produce a balance of longer rails and shorter frame parts.
Best for:
Furniture Frames • Components • Rustic Applications • Manufacturing
Choose Standard when: Your parts can be cut around larger defects and getting an economical grade is more important than overall appearance or if you want to incorporate holes into your cuttings.

Which One Do You Need?
It really comes down to what you’re making.
If appearance and yield matter → Premium Frame
If you’re cutting smaller parts and want a cost-effective option → Standard Frame
Both grades provide the natural warmth and rustic character that make Knotty Alder such a popular choice.
