Bosse Lumber Appearance and Design Attributes

  • Characteristics
    USES:  cigar humidors, cigar cellars, veneer, furniture, cabinetry, inlay, flooring, boatbuilding, and turned objects
    ORIGINS:  West and Central Africa
    BOTANICAL NAME:  Leplaea cedrata (formerly Guarea cedrata)
    COMMON NAME:  Bosse, Nigerian pearwood, light guarea
    COLOR DETAILS:  Heartwood initially a pale pinkish brown, darkening with age to a more golden to medium brown. Pale yellowish sapwood is well defined. Can be highly figured, with grain patterns such as pommele being sought after in veneer form.
    WEIGHT:  3.08 lbs. per board foot, kiln dried
    WORKABILITY:  Interlocked and/or quartersawn pieces can pose a difficulty planing, with tearout being common. Silica is present in this wood, causing cutting edges to dull at an increased rate
  • Capabilities
    Bossé cedar, found in tropical Africa and parts of South America. Its lighter, less resinous wood makes it ideal for large-scale humidor production vs. Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata or Cedrela fissilis) which can "bleed" over time due to it's resinous nature. Bosse Cedar is also available in much wider and longer lumber and is not on the CITES list like Spanish Cedar.
